Narrative Architecture for a Bioregional Future

Cascadia 2040 Press is the creative engine of the 2040 vision. We publish speculative fiction and deep-lore research that explores the intersection of human technology, ecological restoration, and regional autonomy. By telling the stories of tomorrow, we provide the narrative "blueprints" for the work being done today at the Cascadia Research Institute.

The Vision: Why Speculative Fiction?

We believe that we cannot build a future we haven't first imagined. Our stories serve as more than entertainment; they are "narrative simulations" that test the social and technical frameworks of a restored Cascadia. From decentralized energy grids to the rebirth of the Hart Creek salmon run, our publications turn abstract ecological goals into lived human experiences.

From the Archive: "Before the Network Learned to Listen"

By Adam Jovanovski

In this foundational work, Jovanovski explores a world of "optimization mandates" and "invisible borders" where infrastructure often mistakes compliance for health. The story follows Sena, a researcher at UCLA, and Artem, a weaver in the Comox Valley, as they develop a biological network designed to listen to the land rather than extract from it.

At its core, the story introduces the Twelve-Second Blind—a technical and ethical artifact that reminds us that meaning emerges in the pause before measurement. It serves as a meditation on the belief that relationships between people, technology, and the land can be renegotiated on honest terms.

The Cascadia 2040 Series

Our flagship series explores a timeline where the bioregion has successfully transitioned to a "Steady State" economy. Each installment focuses on a different pillar of the 2040 vision:

  • The Grid: Exploring the social impact of phyto-graphene energy autonomy.
  • The Watershed: A deep dive into the 15-year restoration of the Beaufort Range drainage basins.
  • The Autonomy: The political journey of the Cascadia Bioregional Alliance from grassroots advocacy to regional governance.

Connecting Story to Science

Every publication by Cascadia 2040 Press is informed by the real-world data and professional standards of our sister organizations. When you read about the "Source-to-Sea" protocols in our fiction, you are reading about the same RISC-standard methodologies being deployed right now in the Hart Creek Pilot Project. We invite you to read the stories, then join the Alliance to help write the next chapter of our actual history.
