Statement of Solidarity and Bioregional Stewardship

1. Recognition of Territory

We respectfully acknowledge that we live, work, and recreate on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the K’ómoks First Nation and the Qualicum First Nation.

For generations, the K’ómoks people—the "Caretakers of the Land of Plenty"—and the Qualicum people have stewarded the watersheds, coastlines, and forests of this region. We recognize that these lands were never ceded or sold, and that Indigenous rights to self-determination and governance remain inherent and active.

2. Commitment to Bioregionalism

Our support for Bioregionalism is grounded in the understanding that ecological boundaries are more vital than political ones. We acknowledge that:

  • Indigenous Law is Local Law: We commit to respecting Indigenous legal orders and protocols regarding land use, resource management, and conservation.
  • Salmon and Water Governance: We support the efforts of the Coast Salish Gathering and local Nations to manage the Salish Sea and our river systems as unified ecological units.
  • Energy and Economic Sovereignty: We advocate for regional independence that prioritizes Indigenous-led conservation economies, such as the Great Bear Sea initiative and the Guardian Watchmen programs.

3. Substantive Actions

Solidarity requires more than words. In our professional and personal lives, we commit to:

  • Supporting the Guardian Watchmen: Respecting local stewardship closures and reporting environmental concerns directly to Nation-led monitoring offices.
  • Educational Advocacy: Using our platform to amplify the work of organizations like Coast Funds and the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) Knowledge Basket.
  • Two-Eyed Seeing: In our clinical and academic work, we strive to bridge Western evidence-based practices with Indigenous ways of knowing to foster a more holistic and culturally safe environment for all members of our community.

4. Closing Reflection

We are guests on this land, and we accept the responsibility to walk gently and work collaboratively toward a future where the health of the bioregion and the sovereignty of its original caretakers are restored and upheld.
